Sports Technology: Measure What Matters

Sports Technology: Measure What Matters

Technology has changed how people train.

Today, an everyday athlete can monitor information that once required specialist equipment.

Steps.

Heart rate.

Training duration.

Distance.

Pace.

Sleep estimates.

Movement.

Workout history.

The challenge is no longer getting data.

The challenge is knowing what to do with it.

Wearables Can Change Behavior

Activity trackers are not simply electronic accessories.

There is evidence that they can influence behavior.

An umbrella review combining 39 systematic reviews and meta-analyses, covering 163,992 participants, found that wearable activity trackers produced improvements in physical activity across multiple populations.

The pooled effects were equivalent to roughly 1,800 additional steps per day and about 40 additional minutes of walking per day.

Another meta-analysis found increases in daily steps and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity, while effects on sedentary behavior were less consistent.

The distinction is important.

A wearable can provide feedback.

It cannot make decisions for you.

More Metrics Are Not Always Better

A device may generate dozens of measurements.

Only a few may be relevant to your current objective.

A runner may care about pace and distance.

A strength trainee may care more about workout history and recovery patterns.

Someone simply trying to become more active may benefit most from step count and reminders to move.

Data becomes useful when it influences behavior.

Without that connection, it is just information.

Technology Should Reduce Friction

At Poozada, this is the principle behind Sport Tech Wear.

We look for technology that serves an identifiable purpose:

monitoring activity, improving convenience, supporting training organization, increasing visibility or providing useful feedback.

We are less interested in products that add technology merely because technology sounds advanced.

Smart equipment should make the user smarter.

Not simply produce more numbers.
